April is one of the best times of year to be in the Florida Keys. The weather settles into that perfect stretch before summer, the water is active, and the calendar fills up with a mix of local events, festivals, and things to do almost every week.
If you’re in Key West or anywhere throughout the Keys this month, there’s no shortage of ways to get out and experience what makes this area so unique. From fishing tournaments to art walks to community events, April has a little bit of everything.
The month kicks off with a mix of local gatherings and smaller events that give you a feel for the community side of the Keys. Things like the Lower Keys Chamber After Hours and the Yappy Hour events in both Key West and Islamorada are the kind of low-key meetups that locals tend to gravitate toward. They’re easy to drop into and a good way to get connected if you’re newer to the area.
Early April also brings one of the more unique events on the calendar with the Spanish Fly Shark Tournament running from April 2nd through the 4th. Fishing is a huge part of life in the Keys, and tournaments like this draw both serious anglers and spectators who just want to be around the action.
As you move into the first weekend of the month, the focus shifts toward family-friendly events and Easter celebrations. There’s a full lineup including the Key West Minster Dog Show, Pup Pawty Eggstravaganza, the Easter Hangar Egg Hunt, and the 9th Annual Easter Egg Roll. Easter Sunday itself tends to be a mix of relaxed local traditions, with events like Easter brunch at Baker’s Cay and the always popular Local’s Sunday.
Mid-month is when things really start to pick up. The 7-Mile Bridge Run on April 11th is one of the most well-known events in the Keys and draws participants from all over. Around the same time, you’ll see community-focused events like Pet Fiesta and free pet vaccine clinics, which are great examples of how involved and connected the local community is.
Art and culture also have a strong presence this month, especially with the Morada Way Art Walk on April 16th. If you’ve never been, it’s one of those events that captures the creative side of the Keys in a very authentic way. It’s casual, walkable, and full of local artists, galleries, and live music.
One of the biggest highlights of April is the Conch Republic Independence Celebration, running from April 17th through the 26th. This is one of the most iconic events in Key West, blending history, humor, and a full schedule of activities that range from quirky to completely over the top. Around the same time, you also have events like the Marathon Premier Sailfish Tournament and Earth Day celebrations, including a 5K, clean-up efforts, and community initiatives like the Keys tree giveaway.
Toward the end of the month, the calendar stays packed with a mix of fishing tournaments, outdoor events, and live entertainment. The Florida Keys Lionfish Derby, the Cudjoe Gardens Dolphin and Tail Classic, and Reelin For The Cause all highlight the strong connection between the Keys and the water. Events like Ocean Fest and Pops in the Park add a more relaxed, community feel to the schedule.
And then there’s the Key West Songwriters Festival, kicking off at the very end of April and running into early May. This is one of the biggest music events of the year in Key West and brings in both well-known and emerging artists. It’s one of those events that draws a crowd but still feels very connected to the local scene.
Alongside all of these larger events, there are also weekly staples that are part of everyday life in the Keys. The Truman Waterfront Farmers Market runs every Thursday, the Key West Artisan Market takes place throughout the month, and the MCSO Animal Farm has select open dates that are always worth checking out.
What stands out about April is how easy it is to plug into the lifestyle here. There’s always something going on, but nothing ever feels overly structured or forced. You can plan around the bigger events or just stumble into something happening that day and end up having a great time.
It’s also something we see play a role in real estate more than people expect. A lot of buyers first experience the Keys through weekends like these, where there’s a mix of events, great weather, and time on the water. Over time, that turns into a deeper connection to the area. At Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Keys Real Estate | Knight & Gardner Realty, many of the conversations we have with clients start after they’ve spent time here during months like April and begin to picture what it would be like to make it more permanent.
April is a good reminder that life in the Florida Keys is not just about the views or the weather. It’s about the pace, the community, and the constant mix of things to do without ever feeling rushed. And once you experience that firsthand, it tends to stick with you.
